What is a Robotic Lawnmower?

Over the last few years, robotic mowers have surged in popularity and revolutionised the way lawn care is done and providing a hassle-free, healthier method of mowing. Although the initial cost is high compared to a standard rotary lawnmower, the time and money saved long term makes them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Once set up, these little robots will do all the work for you autonomously with little to no input required, being controlled through an app on your phone or tablet.

How do they work?

Robot mowers make use of AI cameras, GPS + RTK (Real Time Kinematic) Positioning, Lidar sensors, and other technology to communicate with satellites and navigate all shapes and sizes of garden. You set them to go out according to the schedule you decide, and they will automatically go out during these times, returning to charge when they run out of battery and then continuing until the job is complete. They are equipped with tiny razor sharp swing blades and use mulching, which involves cutting off small amounts of grass at a time until the grass is the desired length. These clippings will then return to the lawn and act as a natural fertilizer, returning nutrients to the soil, leaving the grass looking tidy and promoting healthier growth.

Why consider a robotic mower?

By far the biggest advantage of robotic mowers is the time it saves from having to mow manually, but there are numerous other reasons for using a robotic mower over a traditional push or ride on mower.

Benefits of Robotic Mowers

Time saved

Robot mowers are fully automated, meaning that you can set them to run at specific times or control them remotely via an app, freeing up time that would normally be spent mowing the lawn.

Mulching

Robotic mowers work by cutting off small amounts of grass each cycle, which acts as fertiliser for the grass and removes the need for manually removing grass clippings. This leads to a healthier, greener lawn.

Reduced cost over time and lower maintenance

Although initially they can be quite an expensive investment, robot mowers consume very minimal amounts of energy, costing just a few pounds a month. They also only require servicing once per year, which is generally significantly less costly (usually £65) than that of a petrol mower or ride-on.

Easier to get to tight and compact spaces

Robot mowers are designed to deal with and navigate around even the most awkward obstacles, which might normally be cumbersome for larger, more traditional mowers. This includes things like trees, flower beds, furniture, fallen fruit, garden equipment or anything else that might get in the way, ensuring that you have a tidy finish even in areas which would be difficult to reach otherwise.

Protection against theft

One concern many people have with robot mowers is the risk of it being stolen, but the risk is actually extremely low. Robot mowers are equipped with comprehensive theft protection including notifications if the mower leaves your lawn and gps tracking that allows you to see the exact location of the mower. The robot is also tied to your account, so even if it was stolen it would not be usable without access to your login details.

Quiet

Robot mowers are a remarkably quiet machine, with the Segway at around 54 dB(A) compared to a petrol mower which is typically around 85-90 dB(A). This means you can run the mower at any time of day without worrying about disturbing the neighbours, ensuring a peaceful garden environment.

Environmentally Friendly

Robot mowers are environmentally friendly, providing zero direct emissions as well as reducing noise pollution and utilizing mulching to enrich the soil.

Remote Operation

Even on holiday or away from home, you can set the mower to run on a specific day every week or manually set it out to mow via. the app, eliminating the need to find another person to do it for you.

Rain

Whereas other mowers might struggle in the rain, damaging the grass and causing damage to the mower itself, robot mowers are designed to run in wet conditions and are water resistant. If you would prefer it to not mow during wet weather, it also takes into account live weather and you can manually change it to not go out when it is raining.

No emptying of grass

Since robot mowers use mulching and only take off tiny layers of grass at a time, there is no need to empty grass clippings.

Should I consider a robot mower in 2025?

Segway X3 series

As the newest innovation in mowing, robot mowers are becoming an increasingly popular choice for lawn care, and they are only becoming more and more capable as technology advances. Now, in 2025 you have new models like the Yarbo lawn mower pro which is even capable of towing trailers, snow blowing, and equipped with a binocular camera and ultrasonic radar for obstacle detection.

Here at Garden Machinery (Glos) Ltd we currently sell both Segway and Sunseeker robot mowers, which we carefully chose over others due to their reliability, innovative technology, and their proven performance in garden settings when compared to others on the market we have tried. If you are considering one but are still uncertain, why not book a free robot demo where we will set one of the mowers running with your own eyes.
